SANKOFA - 2024
Co-written and created with Wanjiku Victoria Seest.
Sankofa is a performance-oriented exploratory piece on the themes of identity, migration and belonging. The title of the piece SANKOFA is borrowed from the Akan people of Ghana, and it means 'To look back'. We believe that when we are stuck, it is necessary at times to look back to where we came from, who we are and what we may have forgotten, to be able to move forward. We would like to suggest as we find a new narrative for Europe, that we look back and remind ourselves of who were once were.
The piece was created in collaboration with Center for Kunst & Interkultur, (CKI) for the project SIRIUS4all. It was co-funded by the European Union.
Additional information on the project can be found at:
BLINKERED - 2023
Co-written with and created by Wanjiku Victoria Seest.
BLINKERED is a performance-oriented, cross-disciplinary piece that invites you to examine and challenge your
biases towards Africa through an array of narratives. It breaks down the single story told about Africa. By way
of story sound, music, video and performance it suggests a humane alternative to the prevailing stereotypes.
Gathoni wa Wairura was also the dramaturg.
BLINKERED was produced as a part of Close Encounters / Embodied Journeys – a choreographic exhibition. It was performed at
the Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Arts in Copenhagen, produced by Dansehallerne and Connexions and curated by Julienne Doko.
